Water monitors (Varanus salvator) are large, intelligent lizards that can reach 5–8 feet in length and live 15–20 years with proper care. They require a very large, secure enclosure — at least 8x4x6 feet for adults — with a basking area of 120–130°F, ambient temps around 85°F, and humidity between 60–80%. Provide a large water area deep enough for swimming and daily soaking.
They are carnivorous and thrive on a varied diet of rodents, fish, insects, crustaceans, and occasional eggs. Always offer fresh water and maintain clean conditions to prevent bacterial growth. Water monitors can become tame with consistent, gentle handling but need experienced care due to their size, strength, and intelligence.
